Research lab seminar 2: "Conversational AI Literacy in Language Learning: Concepts, Applications, and Hands-on Exploration"
This presentation introduces the concept of Conversational AI literacy and its relevance to language learning. It provides an overview of the benefits and applications of Conversational AI in language learning, outlines strategies for developing Conversational AI literacy, and includes a hands-on activity.
N.B. To take part in this workshop, the participants should bring their own laptop.
Author's abstract
As Conversational AI technologies continue to evolve, developing Conversational AI literacy becomes essential for language learners to effectively engage with and benefit from these technologies. I will provide a background on Conversational AI, discussing its development and current applications in language education, and define Conversational AI literacy and outline its key components. I will then illustrate how chatbots can provide learners with interactive practice opportunities and personalised feedback to develop their language skills. Examples of chatbot tools, such as Poe and Mizou, will be demonstrated to show their features and potential applications in language learning. This presentation will include a hands-on activity where participants can interact with chatbots and experience first-hand how they can be used for language practice. Finally, we will discuss the role of language teachers in promoting Conversational AI literacy and creating effective chatbots for their specific teaching contexts. Attendees will be encouraged to reflect on how they can integrate Conversational AI technologies into their own classrooms and contribute to the advancement of language education in the age of AI.
