Research lab seminar 3: Learner Autonomy in the Age of AI: Insights from a University German Course
This presentation shares insights from a project on how students engaged with ChatGPT and developed autonomous learning practices in a university German language course. It draws on data from students' learning journals and portfolios, highlighting the role of course design, teacher guidance and peer interaction in fostering learner autonomy in an AI-assisted learning environment.
Author's abstract
In this presentation, I will share insights from a project that explored how students in a university German course engaged with ChatGPT and developed autonomous learning practices. Drawing on data from students' learning journals and portfolios, the presentation discusses how students used ChatGPT to support their autonomous learning practices, such as setting goals, selecting resources, planning activities, and evaluating progress. Specific examples from the students' reflections illustrate their experiences and strategies for effective AI integration. The findings highlight the importance of course design, teacher guidance and peer interaction in fostering learner autonomy in an AI-assisted learning environment. The presentation discusses the implications of these findings for language education and learning in the age of AI, emphasising the need to promote learner autonomy and AI literacy.
